People seek psychotherapy when they know that they are not as happy as they know they could or would like to be.  Psychotherapy is a particular type of conversation that explores thoughts, feelings about ourselves and our connections to others. It is an opportunity to recognise patterns in relationships and thinking and with that, feel liberated to change.   A psychoanalytic or psychodynamic approach places relationships at the heart of the human experience.

I offer both time-limited and open-ended therapy.  Time limited therapy may focus on a particular issue or life event.  Longer term therapy is helpful in exploring deeper seated relational issues rooted in early life.  These matters can be discussed in an initial consultation.

Apart from the first meeting, sessions take 50 minutes.  The first appointment can take longer and be between 50 to 90 minutes in duration,  Generally speaking, a full hour and a half is needed to gain a clear picture of what is troubling you at the moment and to explore your history etc. without being rushed.  At this initial meeting we can arrange a follow up meeting, usually the following week, before deciding on the best path forward.

In the first instance it may be helpful (but not essential) to arrange a brief telephone conversation by way of an introduction.

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. My working life in therapeutic care spans 30 years.  It began by living and working in a therapeutic community for emotionally troubled children. After some years working in psychiatric social work I trained as a psychotherapist with the Arbours Association. My training included working intensively as a resident therapist at the Arbours Crisis Centre, a distinguished facility providing a psychotherapeutic alternative to inpatient psychiatric treatment. Following qualification in 2000 I worked as a clinical leader to an Arbours long-term therapeutic community.  In more recent years I have worked with students in a University Counselling Service. In addition to my practice, I supervise groups of trainees and newly qualified practitioners in a Psychodynamic Counselling training programme.

I have extensive experience with the therapeutic treatment of
