I practice contemporary, relationally-oriented psychotherapy, which is primarily grounded in psychodynamic and person-centred approaches.

I seek to bring myself fully into relationship with each client, challenging power dynamics around ‘expert’ and ‘patient’, and trusting clients as the experts on themselves. Clients can use our relationship to explore whatever is needed and to get to know themselves in ways that are not possible alone.

The major theoretical positions that I bring to the work are:

  • Psychoanalytic theory: including an interest in unconscious processes and ways in which past experiences may be influencing the present
  • Developmental theory: including research-based psychological understandings of personality development
  • Attachment theory: and how very early relationships influence our relational patterns throughout life
  • Psychosomatic awareness: or a focus on bodily sensation (though my approach is non-contact), in acknowledgement of the interrelatedness of body and mind
  • Social theory: we may venture into more sociological terrains, contextualising your individual experience within broader social and cultural landscapes and the narratives that shape them
  • Creative Arts: or any cultural point of reference base that ‘speaks’ to you or offers us common ground through which to explore experience

I am interested in creative processes and view therapy itself as a creative endeavour. Thus, my work is highly personalised, specific and unique to each client, as together we ‘co-create’ the process and its outcome. I seek to give space to the full intellectual complexity of a given situation without losing connection to its emotional impact.

I bring a broad range of personal and professional experience to my work: above all, a deeply held appreciation of humanity in all its rich diversity, and alongside this, empathy for the struggles people experience in overcoming trauma, and developing meaningful and fulfilling lives in what is often a confusing and imperfect world.

I have explored psychological processes from multiple perspectives - Human Sciences, Arts, Social Sciences and Creative Practice - so that I have a wide theoretical base for approaching psychological insight and facilitating personal growth and change.

Alongside my practice, I am presently undertaking doctoral research exploring our psychological relationship with contemporary cultural challenges, as expressed through the medium of fiction.

Prior to, in between and alongside periods of study, I have worked in commercial, educational, and charitable organisations.

I like to spend my personal time in creative company.
